These are the days Max Homa used to dread. The combination of a saturated golf course, juicy rough, swirling winds and layer-up temperatures expose any player not in full command of his swing and his emotions.
It was a video golf fans had been waiting for, but weren’t sure when, if ever, they might see: Tiger Woods, hitting a golf ball with seemingly no pain or hesitancy. And the reaction was, not surprisingly, one of elation.
With a second consecutive seven-under 65, Homa won his third PGA Tour title and his second in his past 18 starts, both coming in his native California.
Homa doesn’t need any easy social media victories, but he has been presented one during the past five days by one fan begging, pleading and grovelling at his feet to play a round with him.
Whether a bulked-up Bryson is a true force of disruption is a separate conversation; that focus is on the future and a movement, which will play out in weeks and months and years to come.
