McGregor

MT•86 os

What it does: This hollow-body construction uses 1025 carbon steel for the body and high-strength MS300 steel for the face that brings substantial heat at impact. It’s MacGregor, so of course it’s a forged iron. What’s really cool, however, is the co-forging of five grams of tungsten in the lower area of the clubhead to provide increased stability on those niggling mis-hits. A soft polymer
inside the clubhead provides the kind of cushiony feel and flexibility that makes you eager to hit your next shot.

Why we like it: No, we’re not going to see Jack Nicklaus out there swinging these sticks, but it’s nice to see MacGregor back with an iron that is a viable consideration. The MT•86 OS has some potency with its maraging-steel 300 L-face, which wraps around part of the sole. This gives an extra kick on shots struck low on the face. The muscular shaping is tasteful enough to appeal to those who remember the company’s heyday in irons and sits comfortably enough at address for higher single-digit players to think they could haul out the old green-and-white MacGregor staff bag. But don’t do that. Leave that to Jack.

7-iron loft 30.5 degrees; pw loft 44 degrees

Reviewer profile

“It feels soft but every shot jumps off the face. Maybe the longest pitching wedge so far. The sole is smooth through the ground.”
