Cam Davis appeared to be totally out of things at the Rocket Mortgage Classic until a highlight reel eagle-birdie finish got him to 18-under-par, then he waited to see if either Troy Merritt or Joaquin Niemann would birdie 18 (they did not). After Niemann bogeyed the first extra hole, Davis vanquished Merritt with another birdie on the fifth extra hole at Detroit Golf Club.
The 26-year-old Australian holed a 50-foot bunker shot on 17 for a dramatic eagle to get within striking distance then staked a 9-iron from 151 yards on the 18th to six feet and made the putt for what turned out to be a tying birdie. Then on the first hole of overtime, Davis had a similar yardage at 156 yards and pulled the 9-iron again and knocked a beauty to five feet but missed the putt that would have ended things immediately.
Davis made up for that miscue with an approach to 12 feet on the par-3 15th hole but missed that putt to put away Merritt. Merritt, however, failed to convert his five-foot par save to give Davis the win.
Davis’ irons are Titleist’s 620 MBs, a throwback muscle-back blade design. The MB incorporates a refined sole shape designed to help the club move through the turf more smoothly. Developed in consultation with the company’s staff of tour players, those sole tweaks are aimed at helping players deliver the club more efficiently at impact for more swing speed and better distance.
Davis was fourth in strokes gained/tee-to-green with the irons and he also ranked fifth in strokes gained/around-the-green with his Titleist Vokey SM8 wedges.
Maybe not as highlight reel as his hole out on 17, but good enough for his first PGA Tour win nonetheless.
