WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW: Let’s start with the biggest news – TaylorMade’s Milled Grind 5 (MG5) wedges are fully forged.

It’s a first for the Milled Grind line, and a decision made directly in response to player feedback. The constant ask from TaylorMade staffers? More feel. And if you want the kind of soft, buttery sensation elite players crave, forging is the best option. Now, weekend golfers get the opportunity to experience the sensation at impact.

A multitude of grind options remains a staple of the MG5 line-up, including the ever-popular TW grind that was designed with direct feedback from Tiger Woods.

3 Cool Things https://www.golfdigest.com/content/dam/images/golfdigest/fullset/2022/DSC_02184.JPG

1. The forging difference. TaylorMade’s Milled Grind wedges have traditionally leaned on CNC precision for consistent grinds and geometry. But feel? That’s always been the one thing elite players wanted more of.

So with MG5, TaylorMade went all in on forging. The heads are fully forged from soft carbon steel – a first for any Milled Grind wedge. The result is a dramatically softer feel on pitch shots, chips and finesse shots around the green.

Forged from a single billet of soft carbon steel, the MG5s go through a multi-step process that includes everything from rough shaping to precision milling to dial in the grind, grooves, and hosel geometry. The forging doesn’t just enhance feel – it also ensures consistency from head to head.

“We set out to make the best-feeling wedge TaylorMade has ever created,” said Matt Bovee, TaylorMade’s director of product creation for irons and wedges. “And to get that feel, it had to be forged.”

Compared to MG4, the new shape features a slightly refined leading edge and a cleaner topline blend. The result is a look that’s symmetrical, compact and tour-trusted.

2. New grooves, more bite. TaylorMade also took a hard look at spin. The MG5 is the first in the line to use saw-milled grooves, which were created using a new machining process that tightens tolerances and allows engineers to push groove geometry right to the legal limit. The grooves have steeper walls and sharper edges for maximum bite – especially on partial shots.

Add in Spin Tread technology – a treaded RAW face designed to channel away moisture like a set of all-weather tires – and you’re looking at a wedge that holds up in wet conditions.

TaylorMade claims MG5 retains 13 percent more spin than MG4 when hitting from wet turf.

This means a more consistent launch, more friction and more control when the turf gets soft or the ball gets damp.

3. Grinds for all. The MG5 family includes six grind options: three standard bounce (SB, SC, SX) and three specialty (HB, LB, TW), all crafted by TaylorMade wedge master craftsman Greg Cesario.

“For the first time in my career, the MG5 line-up of wedges represents the closest thing to the perfect array of grinds, shapes, feel and spin in one package that I’ve seen in [more than] 45 years.” Cesario said.

SB Grind: Full-sole shape with gentle camber, designed to work in most turf and swing types. Think forgiveness with versatility.

SC Grind: A mid-bounce option that mixes greenside creativity with full-shot stability. Already a favourite among club pros.

SX Grind: A new addition, built around a wide sole and subtle curvature. Best for players who want help from bunkers and soft lies without giving up finesse.

HB Grind: High-bounce with heel relief. Built for diggers or players in soft conditions.

LB Grind: Low-bounce C-grind that sits tight to the turf – perfect for firm courses and shallow swings.

TW Grind: Inspired by Tiger’s current setup. Features more camber and less heel relief in the 60-degree, for a more versatile, bounce-forward wedge. “I’ve honed in on grind profiles that let me hit every shot I need in every condition,” Woods said. “The MG5 TW does exactly that.”
