Blink and you’ll miss 10 years of golf history right now. Last week, LIV Golf – once the foremost threat to PGA Tour dominance in professional golf – played quite possibly its final tournament. Then Good Good, the hottest brand to come out of the YouTube golf movement, had all its feel-good momentum washed away (and then some) after a controversial Callaway driver ad. Oh, and amid all of that, Scottie Scheffler won the Tour Championship and FedEx Cup, making good on the promise of season that up until the last three weeks, was a series of nearlies and almosts.
Now, with dust barely settled on [waves arms wildly] all of that, WTGL, the women’s iteration of the simulator golf league TGL, has arrived. Overnight (Australian time), the league officially unveiled its five debut franchises and their respective rosters, which are set to compete at the SoFi Center in Florida this November and December. Check them out.
The league is rife with talent, both past and present. Legends like Lexi Thompson, Lydia Ko and Michelle Wie West will join forces with the next generation of women’s golf, including Jeeno Thitikul, Lottie Woad and Rose Zhang. The teams themselves will look very familiar to TGL fans as well, with Boston Common Golf, Atlanta Drive Golf Club, Los Angeles Golf Club and New York Golf Club all fielding women’s rosters. The fifth squad, Motor City Golf Club, is a new Detroit-based franchise that will also make its men’s TGL debut later this year.
The most notable absentee, however, is also the most important player in women’s golf: Nelly Korda. Korda was vocal about wanting WTGL to feature mixed-gender teams and competitions and vowed not to play until it did. So far, she has kept that promise and it’s the only blot on what otherwise looks like a strong line-up of elite golfers.
