An insider’s guide to Brisbane.

As the eyes of the golf world turn towards Brisbane in November for the Australian PGA Championship at the iconic Royal Queensland Golf Club, I am often asked, as a born-and-bred Brisbane boy, what golfers and families can get up to when attending. Brisbane really does offer so much more than Olympic Games-standard, world-class golf.

Brisbane presents a plethora of family-friendly attractions for those travelling with loved ones. Here are some of my favourite things to do across the city:

Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary: Located only 20 minutes away from Royal Queensland, this sanctuary is a unique opportunity for families to get up close and personal with Australia’s beloved marsupials. Cuddle a koala, hand-feed kangaroos and meet other native animals in a picturesque bushland setting.

Mini Golf: Fun for all ages, there are plenty of options around. Victoria Park Driving Range and Putt Putt is only 15 minutes away from Royal Queensland and has some great activities and dining. Another favourite of mine is the recently opened mini-golf course at the famous Alexandra Hills Hotel, about a 25-minute drive from Royal Queensland.

South Bank Parklands: This urban paradise along the Brisbane River offers something for everyone. Families can relax on the man-made Streets Beach, explore the lush Epicurious Garden, or take a stroll through the parklands. South Bank is also home to a large variety of dining options. Markets are held there on weekend mornings. Nightly entertainment at QPAC includes concerts, musicals and other performing arts.

Wheel of Brisbane: Adjacent to South Bank Parklands, this giant Ferris wheel offers panoramic views of the city and the river. It’s a wonderful experience for kids and adults alike, offering a different perspective of Brisbane’s skyline.

Queensland Museum: Located in the cultural hub of South Bank, this museum is both educational and entertaining. Families can discover the natural and cultural heritage of Australia through interactive exhibits and captivating displays. My kids love SparkLab and all the interactive exhibits!

Botanic Gardens: Situated in the heart of the city and at Mt Coot-Tha, you have lush gardens that provide a serene escape. You can enjoy a picnic, take a walk, hire some bikes and explore the tropical greenhouse. The view from Mt Coot-Tha at night is special!

Howard Smith Wharves: Stop in and have a meal at one of the top-rated restaurants onsite. I personally love Greca, a wonderful Greek restaurant, while another standout, the Cantonese restaurant Stanley, recently featured on “MasterChef Australia”. You could unwind at the large kids play area or take a glass elevator up (Willy Wonka-style) to the top of the cliffs for a great view of the Story Bridge and city skyline.

Story Bridge Adventure Climb: The view from the top of the Story Bridge is wonderful, especially at twilight. It is a great way to see the city from a different angle for those aged 6 or older.

City Cat: Almost all these activities and places can be accessed by Brisbane’s City Cats and smaller Kitty Cats. These are not only a great way to avoid traffic and get around Brisbane (there is a ferry terminal close to Royal Queensland), but it’s also such a fun way to take in the sites along the river.  Adults and kids will enjoy this river experience. This has to be my top recommendation when in Brisbane. If you prefer other river activities, head down to Riverlife at Kangaroo Cliffs for some adventure.

Golf: It would be remiss not to mention some of the other wonderful courses across Brisbane and its surrounds. Brookwater is a top-rated, public access course in the outer suburbs and one of my favourites. There are so many other accessible courses as well, such as the new Minnippi course, Indooroopilly, St Lucia, Nudgee and where I first took up golf, the Bulimba nine-hole par-3 course.

For those with extra time to spare, Brisbane serves as a gateway to other spectacular Queensland destinations. Consider a day trip to the pristine Gold Coast beaches, Bribie Island, the lush hinterland or the charming Sunshine Coast. Each offers its own unique blend of natural beauty and attractions to explore. Visit Australia Zoo, head out to the famous Woombye Cheese factory, go shopping at Noosa or play golf at places like Pacific Harbour, Pelican Waters, Sanctuary Cove, RACV Royal Pines, Hope Island or Kooralbyn Valley. All these activities are within 90 minutes of Brisbane.
