Of the five golf courses to return to our latest Top 100 Courses ranking after their deliberate omission in 2024, Mount Lawley Golf Club’s transformation perhaps represents the most fulfilling realisation of previously latent potential. While the other four courses (Huntingdale, Royal Sydney, Commonwealth and Links Kennedy Bay) have each made their own strides forward on the design front, their capacity to become something more was long evident. At Mount Lawley, prising out what lay beneath was more an exercise in discovery.
Which is exactly what OCM Golf did. Geoff Ogilvy, Mike Cocking and Ashley Mead’s design firm exposed the suburban Perth layout’s Sandbelt-like qualities, letting the fairways breathe and flow more while renovating the green complexes in such a fashion that they’d now look right at home if relocated 3,000 or so kilometres to the east. The Mount Lawley site had long possessed the qualities to become Perth’s answer to Melbourne’s Sandbelt, but they’d remained hidden for too long. That’s the case no more, as now the layout showcases its best natural features along with strong design traits, making it a must-play in the west.
