After missing the cut in the team event in New Orleans, Tom Kim was 118th in FedEx Cup points. After winning the Genesis Scottish Open, however, the resurgent Kim has jumped to 32nd, a ranking commensurate with his recent fine play.

Nowhere was that more evident than during the final round at The Renaissance Club. Kim shot a no-bogey, six-birdie 64 to take control of the tournament on a day when no other player in the field played bogey-free golf.

It was Kim’s tee-to-green game that was the true standout. Armed with Titleist’s new GTS3 driver, Kim ranked ninth in strokes gained off the tee on the week. He was even better into the greens. Using a split set of Titleist irons (T200 for the 2-iron and T100 for the rest of his set, save for a Titleist Vokey SM10 46-degree pitching wedge) Kim missed just 13 greens over 72 holes, tying for second-best in the field for the week. He also was second in strokes gained/approach, nabbing more than eight shot on the field.

When he did miss the green, Kim stayed steady, using his Titleist Vokey wedges to get up-and-down 12 of 13 times, including four-for-four in sand saves. Such fine work allowed him to make just three bogeys for the week, two of them on three-putts.

Still, the Scotty Cameron TourType Timeless GSS tour prototype putter isn’t likely to be benched anytime soon. All four of Kim’s PGA Tour wins have come with the flat stick.
