Tiger Woods has been named a vice captain for the 2016 Ryder Cup.
Woods, along with Jim Furyk and Steve Stricker, will serve under captain Davis Love III at Hazeltine Golf Club next year. Tom Lehman was previously announced as a vice captain.
“They said, ‘We will do anything you ask us to do to make this Ryder Cup team successful,'” Love said of his assistants.
“He wants to play and be a vice captain. He wants to be the leader of his group, this pod system,” Love said.
“Tiger wants to be a leader of the group, but he wants to be on the golf course. He doesn’t want to be a general sitting in a room. He wants to be in the battle.”
Woods has shown increasing interest in team competitions in the past year. He accepted a role on the Ryder Cup Task Force and called Love and Fred Couples to offer advice during the Presidents Cup last month. Love said it was then that Woods volunteered his help for next year in a more official capacity.
“This is something I want to do,” said Woods. “I will continue to do whatever I can to help win the Cup back.”
“Once I’m fully healthy, I’d like to try to make the team, too, but either way, I’m very excited to . . . get a U.S. victory.”
Like Woods, Furyk and Stricker also hope to be a part of the team as players.
“If they make the team, we’ll have to cross that bridge when we get to it,” Love said.
