Five-time Major champion Phil Mickelson is reportedly going to announce Australian coach Andrew Getson as his full-time instructor after parting ways with long-term teacher Butch Harmon.
Lefty told Golf Channel reporter Tim Rosaforte that he and Getson had been in discussions for a potential partnership but nothing would be confirmed until January.
“I like what Andrew has to say,” Mickelson said. “It’s very possible that we’re going to work together, but I’m not going to promise that or guarantee that. I want to get some different perspectives and ideas.”
Getson –  an instructor at Grayhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale, Arizona – is a Victorian who grew up playing with Stuart Appelby, Robert Allenby, Aaron Baddeley and Geoff Ogilvy at the Victoria Institute of Sport and was a member of the Victorian state team.
He played on the Asian, Australasian and Nationwide Tours before becoming a teacher and has given lessons to US PGA tour star Kevin Streelman and even former US President Bill Clinton.
Baddeley has also had several lessons with Getson and said he had a “simple” teaching style.
“He doesn’t complicate things,” Baddeley said. “Anybody who will come to me and say, ‘Who is a good teacher here in Scottsdale?’ I always tell them Getto.”
Mickelson said the talks focussed on Mickelson’s posture and added that he plans to meet with Getson on November 19.
Getson’s bio on Grayhawk Golf Club’s website reads:
“In 2009 Andrew Getson joined the Grayhawk Learning Center staff. He brings with him a decade of experience gained on the Asian, Australasian and Nationwide Tours. During that time he carded a handful of top 10 finishes including 1st place in the Sedona Open, 2nd place in the Thailand Masters and 2nd place in the South Australian PGA Championship.”
The move furthers the reputation of Australian golf coaches following Victorian Cameron McCormick’s enormous success coaching world No.2 Jordan Spieth. McCormick guided Spieth to two Major championships and a FedEx Cup title this year, earning him a PGA Teacher of America Teacher of The Year award.
