Greg Norman today announced the inaugural Mateship Charity Golf Tournament celebrating the 100-year alliance between Australia and the United States in support of the American Australian Veterans’ Scholarship Fund.

In 2018, Australia and the United States will mark a centenary of mateship – a friendship first formed in the trenches of World War I during the Battle of Hamel on July 4, 1918. Norman and the American Australian Association have teamed to mark the occasion with the Mateship Charity Golf Tournament on Friday, October 6, 2017.

Norman and the Honourable Joe Hockey, Australian Ambassador to the United States, will host the historic event at the Greg Norman-designed Golf Club at Lansdowne in Leesburg, Virginia, located 56 kilometres outside of Washington D.C. There will be a shotgun start at 10am in an 18-hole foursome scramble format, followed by an award presentation, cocktail hour and silent auction at 4pm.

“The depth and strength of the alliance between Australia and America is bound by common values and I am proud of the extremely tight bond I have as an Australian living in the USA,” said Norman. “I have felt connected as if I was an American and I am honoured to be continually strengthening the relationship between Big Brother and Little Brother, Australia.”

The Scholarship Fund benefits honourably discharged Australian and American veterans who wish to have the opportunity to study abroad and experience first-hand the culture and society of each other’s country. The program will enable eligible veterans to enroll in an accredited course of one year’s duration or longer that leads to an undergraduate or postgraduate degree.

“I’m looking forward to partnering with Greg Norman on the Inaugural Mateship Charity Golf Tournament. Very few Australians have made as much of an impact as Greg has in the US,” said Hockey. “He is the definition of what Mateship is all about (and hopefully he’ll help improve my handicap).”
