When Joaquin Niemann first burst on to the PGA Tour scene, he was making the game look easy. The 20-year-old former No.1-ranked amateur finished inside the top-eight four times in his first eight starts as a pro, displaying the type of game that signalled a win was coming soon.

But, like many young, future stars quickly find out, it’s not that easy. Niemann went through a bit of a sophomore slump in 2019, if you can call it that. He still had four top-10s and nearly $US1.5 million in earnings, but no breakthrough win.

That changed today at the Greenbrier Resort, where Niemann made the game look very easy, shooting a six-under 64 to win by six shots for his first PGA Tour win in just his 44th start. While there are sure to be many more wins in his future, it will be tough to top this one, as it made him the first ever Chilean-born PGA Tour winner. Understandably, that milestone made Niemann emotional.

“It’s just, it’s crazy, I mean, I’m really happy for my family, my coach,” said Niemann, fighting back tears.

“It’s amazing, I’ve been thinking about this my whole life, since I started playing golf.”

The win makes Niemann the sixth first-time winner in the past 11 PGA Tour events.
