After five hours of delays due to strong winds and heavy rain at the opening round of the Evian Championship, the first round was cancelled. The tournament will be shortened to 54 holes starting today, with the cut being made tomorrow night.
First round pairings will remain the same as were scheduled for yesterday and more than half the field will get to reset their scores.
The second chance may fare well for Sung Hyun Park, as she double-bogeyed two of the four holes she played. Danielle Kang also has the opportunity to erase her one-over start that included a bogey on her second hole of the day.
As for the early leaders, they’ll have to fight back to the top again. Jessica Korda and So Yeon Ryu were tied for the lead at two-under. Korda got through eight soggy holes, three of which she birdied, while Ryu finished five holes.
“The good news is the golf course is draining like never before; we really like what’s going on with the greens and fairways,” said LPGA commissioner Mike Whan (pictured). “But with the hills and caddie bags, today we were worried about safety, everything is pretty saturated and if somebody goes down it’s not going to be a great experience.”
