Ted Potter Jnr broke his ankle in 2014, requiring it to be held together with some screws. This morning, Australian time, Potter more than held it together during the final round of the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am for his second US PGA Tour victory.
Potter, playing with world No.1 Dustin Johnson, who he started the day tied with for the 54-hole lead, bogeyed the first hole before rebounding with four birdies over the next six holes, capped by a chip-in for birdie from behind the green on the short par-3 seventh with his Cleveland RTX-3 60-degree wedge.
From there, Potter parred in, showing steadiness off the tee, using an array of Ping G400 metal woods (driver, 3-wood and a pair of hybrids). It was Potter’s calm on the greens, however, that perhaps keyed his victory, as he showed touch on a number of lengthy lag putts and converting six of those nervy putts between four and eight feet for par.
Of course it would be impossible to talk about Potter’s victory without mentioning his 62 on the Shore course at Monterey Peninsula Country Club during Saturday’s third round. Incredibly, Potter shot the low round of the tournament despite carding back-to-back bogeys on his last two holes that day.
Potter made a timely putter change this week, putting a centre-shafted Odyssey White Hot #2 putter – a model he has used before – into play. Don’t expect that club to be jettisoned any time soon.
