Well that wasn’t in the script.

A sweet-swinging Aussie decked out in Nike clothing swinging another company’s clubs was tipped to march to his maiden Australian Open title. But Cameron Davis wasn’t THAT man.

But one could have been forgiven for thinking the lanky Sydneysider who stole this year’s Stonehaven Cup from underneath our noses was a young Jason Day, such was his power, poise and precision from tee to green.

Davis was unflappable with every club in hand and, remarkably, the only player to shoot four rounds in the 60s, a feat punctuated by a closing 7-under 64 that saw him turn a six-shot deficit into the stuff dreams are made of.

“I’m a little bit numb right now,” said Davis, who made 22 birdies and an eagle over the four days. “I really didn’t expect to be here after staring six shots back. I didn’t think I was far enough up the leader board. I didn’t actually look at the board all day. Even when I hold for birdie on the last I didn’t know exactly where I was. When I got into the scorer’s hut, I was blown away by where I was at.”

Davis was strong off the tee all week with his Titleist 917D3 driver, while his ability to find the back of the cup with his Scotty Cameron Futura X 5.5 was validated with his ice-cool championship-winning birdie putt on 18.

But there was no mistaking the shot of the tournament – Davis’ hole-out for eagle at the 380m par-4 12th, where he landed one of his Vokey SM6 wedges past the pin only to see it spin right back into the hole.

It was one of a string of world-class wedges struck all week by the Monash Country Club product.

But if you think all that’s impressive, consider this: Davis can probably do it all again … left-handed!  Just earlier this month he showed his ambidexterity when he switched hands while beating balls on the range:

The kid has talent … and a bag of clubs he won’t be changing anytime soon.
