WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW: The new Chamber Justice putter combines adjustable alignment features with an optical laser attachment to help golfers better understand the way they aim to incorporate the ideal alignment markings. The series of 10 optional alignment plates for the rear flange of the heel-toe weighted, composite and tungsten-weighted mallet design allow golfers to use the detachable laser to determine which plate produces the best results.
PRICE: $700. 33, 34, 35-inch models, heel- and center-shafted.
3 Cool Things
1. Aim game. Given that the target is the smallest for any shot in golf, aim and alignment seems a crucial part of how one should go about the business of putting. But according to Chamber Golf managing director Vikash Sanyal, an industry veteran who was co-founder of the Odyssey and Never Compromise putter brands in the early days of his career, not enough is being done with golfers to help them get better aligned to that very precise target. While there are plenty of putters that offer different and even customizable types of alignment features, there is no way for a golfer to know that a certain pattern or alignment style actually puts the putter in the proper position at address. That’s where the new Chamber Justice mallet putter looks to offer a solution.
A thin laser alignment device fits into a slot just behind the topline of the Chamber Justice putter. It’s called the A-LOC system (for “alignment laser optic confirmed”). Separate devices show where the face is aimed in both outdoor and indoor settings. Meanwhile, a series of 10 alignment plates can fit into the back flange of the putter, allowing a player to find the aiming cues that work the best, or more specifically the plates that show the golfer he or she is aiming the laser correctly.
“The total system works together with your vision,” Sanyal said. “Golfers learn their visual tendencies so they can line up correctly—every time—and stay true to their line through impact. The laser never lies. Once golfers can actually see whether they’re aligned, everything changes.”
The collection of alignment plates includes circles, arrows (triangles) and lines against a contrasting white or black background, as well as white and red solid backgrounds. The plates attach to the putter through a sole screw and the kit also includes an aiming screen to show where the laser is pointing and how close you are to the target. The 10 plates are numbered in the order they should be tried to drill down to the most repeatable alignment setup
2. Forgiveness first. While the alignment story might be the major hook of the Chamber Justice mallet, there’s a substantial secondary story with the design that focuses on a big boost toward stability. The mallet’s lightweight aluminum body is supported by heavy tungsten sole weights in the heel and toe to increase stability on off-center hits. The heel and toe weights account for over 90 grams each, or just over half of the total mass of the putter head. When combined with the surrounding aluminum on the heel and toe, Sanyal said that puts over 90 percent of the putter head’s mass in the heel and toe. The intent is that mis-hits roll out a similar distance as center hits.
3. Face facts. The grooved face on the Chamber Justice mallet is made from milled aluminum for a softer feel. The grooves are designed to provide consistent impact for a repeatable launch and a quicker initial forward roll.
