It seems only fitting a guy who has seemingly been waiting for his first PGA Tour win forever grabbed it in the final regular-season event of the season. That, however, will suit Cameron Young just fine, who after a slew of second-place showings (seven) finally found the winner’s circle at the Wyndham Championship.

Asked about trying to close out the win, Young said, “I’m just looking to try to beat second place by as many as I can. That’s been my mindset from the first tee on Thursday and that’s what I’m going to try to do tomorrow.”

Young left no doubt, following up an opening bogey with five consecutive birdies to open a staggering nine-shot lead. Leave no doubt, indeed.

Young’s first win came in his first week with a new Titleist Pro V1x prototype golf ball. Young had been playing the company’s Pro V1 Left Dot ball.

During a visit to the Titleist Performance Centre at Manchester Lane in Acushnet, Massachusetts, Young spent a range session with Fordie Pitts, Titleist’s director of tour research and validation, testing early iterations of what would eventually become the ball he used to win his first PGA Tour title.

This week at the Wyndham Championship marked the first opportunity for Young to test the final Pro V1x prototype on site and potentially play it in competition.

“We weren’t sure if he was going to test it this week, but as he was warming up, he asked to hit a couple on the range,” Pitts said. “He was then curious to see some shots out on the course.”

Young, accompanied by Pitts, teed off Sedgefield’s first hole with both his gamer and the Pro V1x prototype. By the second hole, he was exclusively hitting shots with the Pro V1x.

Said Pitts, “Performance-wise, he was hitting tight draws everywhere. His misses were staying more in play. He hit some, what he would call ‘11 o’clock shots’, where again he’s taking a little something off it. He had great control there.”

Further validation came on the seventh, a par 3 that played between 168 and 201 metres during the tournament. The setup on Tuesday’s practice round called for a 5-iron from Young, who thought there was “no way” he could get a 6-iron to the flag with his Left Dot.

“He then hits this 6-iron [with the Pro V1x prototype] absolutely dead at the flag, and it lands right next to the pin, ending up just past it,” Pitts said. “And his response was, ‘remarkable.’ He couldn’t believe that he got that club there.” After the nine-hole practice round on Tuesday, Pitts walked with Young for nine more holes on Wednesday’s practice round. Following the round, Young asked the team to put the Pro V1x prototypes in his locker.

The new balls delivered. Young was second off the tee in strokes gained/off the tee as well as driving distance (an impressive 304m) with his 9-degree Titleist GT2 driver with a Mitsubishi Tensei 1K Pro Orange 70 TX and the adjustable hosel set at the neutral A-1 setting.

He was equally proficient on the greens with his Scotty Cameron by Titleist Phantom 9.5 tour-only prototype mallet putter. He not only led the field in putts per green in regulation but topped the field strokes gained/putting as well, beating the field average by a staggering 11.5 strokes.

Young gave Golf Digest an interesting tidbit about his gear a little more than a year ago. “I have four wedges but only two lengths,” he said. “The 48 and 52 are the same, and the 57 and 62 are, too. It helps me control my yardages.”

At the Wyndham, Young was in total control of just about everything.
