On Wednesday, Bronny James, the son of all-time NBA great LeBron James, will embark on a new journey: golf influencer. James, who plays predominantly for the Los Angeles Lakers’ G-League affiliate, the South Bay Lakers, will join YouTube golf superstar Grant Horvat for a highly anticipated video that is sure to break the Internet. On Tuesday, Horvat shared a brief teaser for the episode, highlighting the evolution of James’ golf swing after playing for only “four months.” Needless to say, it was pretty impressive.

The only problem? We’ve seen this swing before … six years ago.

So yeah, Bronny’s swing looks great, but someone, somewhere is fudging the numbers a little bit. Our earliest story featuring James’ swing dates back to 2018, and that’s far from the only time we’ve seen it, with it popping up multiple times over the years. Time flies, but last time we checked, 2018 wasn’t “four months” ago, nor was 2019 nor 2020 nor, well, you get the idea.
Much of this depends on how you define “playing” golf. Does taking a few hacks while on vacation or messing around at TopGolf count as playing golf? Or does that journey begin later? Perhaps after your first lesson, 18-hole round or handicap index? Everybody will have a different answer, but we can all agree that starting from nothing is very different than progressing from a casual golfer to a regular.
We also that know LeBron James Sr. was finally bit by the golf bug this summer, and has been seen hitting the links, rain or shine, often with his son in tow. This timing would line up with Bronny James’ “four month” claim. Perhaps this is how Bronny sees his golf story. But we also know the James boys have a history of, er, stretching the truth a little bit. So which is it? Will tomorrow’s episode showcase a beginning golfer with a promising, natural move or will it be lift the lid on another James family fib? We’ll guess you’ll just have to tune in to find out …
