Australian Jeffrey Guan has had a tough start to the Junior Players Championship with the defending champion shooting a four-over-par 76 on day one at TPC Sawgrass.

The champion last year, Sydneysider Guan was one over par at the turn in Friday’s first round. He then signed for a back nine of 39, which featured double-bogeys at the par-4 10th and the famous par-3 17th.

Guan will begin the second round of four shots behind the leader, Nicholas Gross, who was stellar during a 68 on a windy day at the headquarters of the PGA Tour.

Guan is the only Australian in the field at the junior equivalent of the PGA Tour’s flagship tournament, the Players championship.
