Golfers are used to dealing with hazards on the course. Water, bunkers, thick rough, the occasional tree. But a truck spilling its load of golf balls and nails across the Pacific Highway near Wootton Way in Coolongolook is probably taking the concept of a hazard a little too far.

One northbound lane was closed earlier today after the truck lost its rather unusual combination of cargo on the New South Wales Mid North Coast, with traffic crews and Fire and Rescue NSW called in to carefully clean up the mess. And while there was no shortage of potential punchlines, Fire and Rescue NSW got there first.
“Despite the pointy nature of some of the material, luckily we can report nobody has got a hole in one,” the service posted on Facebook.
We’ll admit, that’s a pretty solid effort.

The incident certainly presented some interesting challenges. Golf balls have a habit of rolling in every direction, while nails are, well, nails. Throw the two together on a busy highway and you’ve got what could generously be described as a particularly hazardous fairway. Thankfully, nobody was injured and crews were able to get the situation under control.
No word yet on whether any opportunistic golfers were able to restock their bags. Still, it raises an important question: was the truck driver heading to the driving range, the hardware store, or simply trying to make the world’s strangest two-ball scramble? Either way, it’s probably fair to say this was one delivery that didn’t quite go according to plan.
For motorists, the advice is simple: expect delays, watch out for the hazards and, whatever you do, don’t try to play it as it lies.
