Nico Echavarria made birdie on the 72nd hole of the Zozo Championship Sunday in Japan to hold off Justin Thomas and Max Greyserman by a shot. It’s his second PGA Tour victory, but the first one that will allow him to earn an invitation to the Masters.

The 30-year-old from Colombia shot a final-round 67 at Narashino Country Club to end the week at 20-under-par total.

Then tears flowed. Not immediately, but after hugging his girlfriend Claudia De Antonio, Echavarria was able to make a quick call and FaceTime his parents Emilio and Ana Maria, who were up in the middle of the night in Colombia.

That’s when it happened. Talking to Mom, that’ll do it almost every time.

“Nico, we are so happy,” Ana Maria said.

She then followed with, “Nico, we are going to Augusta.”

That’s right, there is not a chance in the world that Mom isn’t going to be with her son next April when he plays the Masters.

With Nico continuing to cry, again, Mom to the rescue, said, “So good. Cry, cry a lot.”

Wonderful stuff.

“I wanted to call, I love you guys a lot,” Nico said.

But quickly, before hanging up, Dad needed to let his son know that he was impressed with his 3-wood approach from 273 yards to 40 feet on the 18th hole, which set up the winning two-putt for birdie.

De Antonio then popped her head into the screen.

“Claudia, Congratulations to you too,” Emilio said.

“You’re still awake,” Claudia asked, as it was smack in the middle of the night in Colombia.

Of course they were awake.
