Even the world No.1 gets a bad break now and again. And this one was awful.
The scorecard will show that Scottie Scheffler made a bogey on the par-5 third hole on the final day of the FedEx St Jude Championship and even the ShotLink computer doesn’t tell the whole story.
Scheffler hit his second shot 217 metres into the front-left greenside bunker at TPC Southwind. He hit what appeared to be a good bunker shot that hit a sprinkler head, took a huge bounce forward and rolled into the water on the right side of the green.
“No way, that is unbelievable,” said CBS Sports’ Colt Knost.
“That is one of the worst breaks I’ve seen all year,” Trevor Immelman said. “What just happened?”
Scheffler calmly still got the ball up and down, chipping the next one inside three feet and converting that for bogey. But the television crew seemed to think that the original bunker shot was going to be fairly close, meaning a potential birdie ended in a scrambling bogey. He still walked off the green with a two-shot lead as his playing partner, Sam Burns, made double-bogey on that same hole and Sungjae Im made bogey on the fifth.
