A stunning hole-out eagle was the highlight of a fighting second round from Cameron Smith at the Canadian Open that gave him a good chance to make the cut despite a disastrous opening round.

World No.4 Smith came into Canada’s national open as one of the favourites but didn’t live up to his billing on day one, posting an error-laden six-over-par 76 at the par-70 St George’s Golf Club outside Toronto.

But on Friday, the Queenslander rocketed back up the leaderboard with a 65 that improved his total to one over – which left Smith sitting on the projected cut line before the afternoon wave went out to play.

Teeing off the 10th hole, Smith birdied his first two holes and posted an opening nine score of three under.

A birdie and a bogey on his back nine was followed by a 353-yard drive at the par-4 fifth, Smith’s 14th hole, leaving a 78-yard wedge in. Then Smith did this:

Smith currently co-leads a small Australian contingent alongside countryman Brett Drewitt who is also one over.

Veterans Cam Percy (one over, afternoon wave) and Mark Hensby (seven over) rounded out the Australian contingent after Greg Chalmers withdrew.
