A frustrated Matt Jones lit up social media when he launched his putter into the water during the third round of the Arnold Palmer Invitational in Florida.

Jones, who has struggled for good results since a third-place finish at the PGA Tour event on Maui in early January, was battling well on a windy third round.

He was only one-over-par through the first 10 holes at the notoriously difficult Bay Hill golf course in Orlando.

At the 11th, the Sydney native had an eight-foot birdie chance to get to even with the card.

He missed it, tapped in for par and threw the putter into the water left of the green.

Jones putted with a wedge for the remaining seven holes, but his only blemishes on the card coming home were a double-bogey at the par-4 15th and a bogey at the par-3 17th.

Jones shot 76 to drop to five over and declined to comment about the putter toss after the round.

It was a tough day for the entire Australian contingent who made the cut at Bay Hill, where Americans Billy Horschel (71) and Talor Gooch (72) climb into a share of the 54-hole lead at seven under.

Viktor Hovland struggled on day three, dropping three shots to sit third at six under.

Adam Scott (74) and Lucas Herbert (74) were best placed of the Australians at two over for the tournament.

Herbert told Australian Golf Digest the conditions were as brutal as they appeared.

“It was about as hard as (PGA Tour) courses can get; you’re not getting spin on the ball anywhere around the greens and there is a lot of pressure on every shot,” he said after his round.

“If you’re in the wrong spot there are shots you can’t stop within 20 feet of the hole. It’s very, very difficult and the scores are showing that.

“With the wind, firm greens and really thick rough there is no wiggle room you have to stand up and hit a great shot every time and it’s stressful.”

Former Palmer champion Marc Leishman rounds out the Australian pack and he carded a 78 to fall to five over.
