Hamish Blake has finally perfected what he believes is the most important shot in golf. And, naturally, his reasoning has very little to do with golf.
The Australian comedian and long-time golf tragic has shared video of himself holing out in one on what appears to be the ultra-exclusive Tara Iti course in New Zealand, producing the kind of shot most golfers spend a lifetime chasing.

But Blake’s explanation for why the hole-in-one is such a valuable addition to his game is typically Hamish.
“If you’ve followed all the great golf content I post on here you’ll know that for a while I’ve often argued that, in my opinion (and I know everyone is different) the hole-in-one is really one of the most beneficial shots you can learn in golf,” he wrote on Instagram.
“It’s a very low score (this is good) and it really opens up a lot of team drinking opportunities.”
Case closed.
Blake then revealed that the ace was the result of some friendly encouragement from his best mate Andy Lee, who apparently decided the comedian’s golf needed some fairly direct intervention.
“Big thanks to a best friend of mine called Andy, who let me come and play at his club and I’m so glad I followed his ‘get a hole-in-one NOW and stop embarrassing me’ threat he hissed at me just before this.”

The video shows Blake and Lee striding towards the green in anticipation as no golf ball can be seen on the putting surface, prompting the sort of celebration that is entirely justified when you’ve just joined one of golf’s most exclusive clubs. For Blake, however, the achievement appears to have immediately become less about the golfing milestone and more about the possibilities it presents for future rounds.
“What a day,” he wrote. “Am really happy to have perfected it and now look forward to adding it to every round and really reaping the benefits.”

While the exact details of the hole are difficult to confirm from the Instagram post, the setting appears to be Tara Iti, the famously private New Zealand course north of Auckland that is regarded as one of the world’s most exclusive golf clubs with breathtaking views. Not a bad place to finally discover your supposed ‘signature shot’.
And if Blake’s theory is correct, we can probably expect a lot more “team drinking opportunities” from here on in.
