Vokey’s Senior Director of Player Relations, Aaron Dill, demonstrates his fitting process, explaining the clues he looks for in a player’s technique and why the right grind and bounce can transform confidence around the greens.
What does one of the world’s leading wedge fitters notice within just a few chip shots?
Aaron Dill, Senior Director of Player Relations for Vokey Wedges, walked through his fitting process, explaining how he assesses a player’s short game before recommending changes to wedge grind and bounce.
According to Dill, the first things he pays attention to are sound, ball flight, consistency and the player’s tempo.
“I know a wedge player is really comfortable when he’s fast.” he explained. “When he’s moving through the shots quickly … it’s usually a sign that they feel pretty comfortable with what they have in their hands.”
The conversation doesn’t stop with the golf swing. Dill also asks about course conditions, what the player likes, what they don’t like and whether anything has changed in their game before looking for a solution that builds confidence.
He said much of his fitting work centres on 58- and 60-degree wedges because they are the most sensitive clubs in the bag for short-game performance. Depending on conditions or even changes in a player’s swing, he may recommend a different wedge to help restore confidence.
During the demonstration, Dill identified slightly heavy contact before introducing different wedge options without revealing what had changed.
“This is why fitting is so important,” he said. “You want players to understand why we make all these different things.”
As the session progressed, he pointed to improvements in strike quality, lower flight and increased spin, describing the sequence of “contact, flight, spin” as the key to good wedge play.
After observing that the club was entering the turf slightly behind the ball, Dill recommended a 63K grind. He explained that the additional sole width would allow the club to glide through the turf more easily, acting as a skid plate and helping to protect against slight errors in contact.
After just a handful of shots, the fitting wrapped up with a simple verdict from the golfer: “It’s my best fitting of all time.”
