It should go without saying that if you attend a tour event, you should keep your head on a swivel. These guys are good, but they’re not machines. And Jhonattan Vegas provided the latest example of that with a shank during the first round of the Tour Championship that knocked a fan out of his seat. Literally.

The shot occurred on East Lake’s difficult par-4 eighth hole, which used to play as the 17th until they swapped the nines before last year’s Tour Championship. Vegas chose an iron off the tee to try to avoid the water left and the bunkers right, but the ‘hosel rocket’ wound up near the sixth tee where one unsuspecting fan almost had his day of watching golf cut short. Incredibly, Vegas’ shot still travelled 218 metres (238 yards – these guys even make shanks look pretty good) and he eventually had a 10-footer for par on the hole, although he missed. Anyway, have a look and a listen as the blooper provided some fun for Golf Channel’s announcers:

Luckily, the guy wasn’t injured, and props to him for having the athleticism to pop right up after doing that backwards roll. But unfortunately, it looks like he may have needed a replacement beer.
