IMPATIENCE and confidence collided spectacularly at Oakmont today when Rory McIlroy teed up a ball and blasted an iron shot directly over a crowd of US Open fans.

During his practice round this morning, the Northern Irishman backed his ballstriking ability to clear a gallery that failed to notice they were obstructing his path to the fairway.

Fans in the grandstand behind the tee were shocked, with one woman remarking: “He’s going to hit it over those people. Is he nuts?”

One fan was a little more brutal, suggesting the four-time Major champion should “hit a little stinger down there.” McIlroy, however, didn’t take the suggestion to hit a low ball into the crowd and instead flushed it straight into the air, and then reloaded.
