Hinako Shibuno didn’t have much to smile about on Sunday at the US Women’s Open. Nor did anyone else in the field.
That’s because heavy rain and thunderstorms halted play about 90 minutes after final-round play began, and the golf never resumed. With Champions Golf Club saturated with water and more storms forecast for later in the afternoon, the USGA suspended play for the remainder of the day shortly after 12:30pm local time. According to the USGA, .73 inches of rain fell at the course over a 24-hour period.
The final round will resume on Monday morning with Shibuno leading by one over Amy Olson. The players in the final four lead groups had yet to tee off.
“We want to ensure course conditions are worthy of crowning a Major champion,” said John Bodenhamer, senior managing director of championships, said in a statement.
Play will resume at 9am ET on Monday (Tuesday, 1am AEDT).
