There’s still another full day to play at Shinnecock Hills, but Wyndham Clark took a big step towards winning a second US Open with one jaw-dropping approach shot during the third round.
On a day marked by Clark continuing to pour in clutch par putts, he had a chance to go on the offensive on the par-5 16th. And, boy, did he take advantage.

From the fairway, Clark hit a majestic high cut with a fairway wood from 275 yards (251 metres) away that somehow finished just below the hole about five feet away to set up the first eagle of the tournament there. Have a look at this majestic shot that will go down as an all-time US Open highlight if Clark is to go on to hoist the trophy tomorrow:

Wow. What an impressive moment. All that was missing was Johnny Miller calling it “The shot of his life!”
With the eagle, Clark moved to eight-under, a full seven (!) shots clear of everyone else. Again, there’s a lot of golf to be played, but Clark has to be feeling pretty good about his position.
