There are, quite literally, only two players in recent memory who could be the talk of a major championship without even being in the field: Phil Mickelson and Tiger Woods. Unfortunately, they both remain firmly in the conversation for all the wrong reasons.
On this week’s episode of The Loop podcast, we discussed why that is with Golf Digest senior writer Joel Beall, who, along with Tod Leonard, was the first to report on the accusations of inappropriate contact with a female golf course employee last week. The latest unsavory headline in a series of unsavory headlines involving Mickelson over the last eight years.
It all started in 2018 at Shinnecock, site of this week’s U.S. Open, where Mickelson chased after a moving ball and struck it, setting off fireworks on social media and in the actual media center that week. I’ll still never forget the gigantic scrum of reporters who surrounding Mickelson like locusts following his round that day. A scene unlike any other I’ve experienced.
We chatted about that day, what’s happened to Mickelson since, and where he goes from here below. Plus, our picks for the U.S. Open. Please, have a listen, and like and subscribe to The Loop wherever you get your podcasts:
