When we practise, we tend to focus our energy on physical skill execution but there is a simple exercise you can do to train your brain. So much of our execution is dependent on what we are thinking and how we are feeling in the moments before we take the club back and we shouldn’t overlook the importance of having a clear focus prior to each shot.

To sharpen that focus, play nine holes at your home course and play your approach shots to the side of the green considered to be the ‘best miss’ and then try to get up and down.

So often in golf we get fixated on the flag and use that as our aiming point. Instead, shift your focus to either the left or right side of the green and zero in on your target. Do this and you will be amazed at how many greens you hit in regulation the next time you play.

Quick tip

Let the lie decide

When you are in the rough, really examine the lie of your golf ball. If it is sitting up, don’t ground the club before starting your backswing; hover it just behind the ball. If the ball is sitting down, take a more lofted club for better contact. It’s all about getting back in play for the best chance to make par.
