Western Australia’s premier golf course is known to interstate and international viewers through the succession of top-tier tournaments held at the Perth club, including February’s World Super 6 Perth. Framed by a large lake and with fairways riding the considerable slopes of the land around it, Lake Karrinyup is a quintessential West Australian golf course with the flora and fauna to match. Alex Russell’s original design received a facelift at the hands of Michael Clayton’s design firm a decade ago, reviving many of the best parts of the 90-year-old layout.

Long regarded as a right-to-left player’s course, Karrinyup owns far more intricacies than just a series of right-turning doglegs. The bunkering style – rugged and resplendent – is a vitally strategic element of the design, as are the numerous elevation changes. Repeatedly throughout the round players face uphill, downhill and sidehill approaches (and often a combination of the three) in a supreme test of wits and ball-striking prowess. To play Perth’s premier course is a test of golf intuition and navigation.
