The day after Nike announced it was exiting the golf equipment business, the man most responsible for the company entering that business weighed in. Tiger Woods took to Twitter to offer his thanks to Nike for the clubs and balls that he used for most of his pro career.
And that’s where some people on Twitter got worked up. Woods, of course, won four consecutive Majors beginning with the 2000 US Open and ending with the 2001 Masters (He was only using Nike’s golf ball at that point). As incredible a feat as it was, technically, the “Tiger Slam” wasn’t a calendar Grand Slam since he didn’t win all four Majors in the same year – although some, including Woods seem to think holding all four trophies at the same time is all that matters. And thus, 15 years later, you get opposing reactions like these:
On Wednesday night, Woods’ agent, Mark Steinberg told Golf Channel that his client would make an equipment change “methodically, and in a proper way,” but that Woods will remain “one of the global icons for Nike and Nike Golf.” And apparently, the debate among golf fans over his “Slam” will remain as well.
