Tiger Woods today announced that he has undergone yet another surgery.

The 15-time major winner said in a post on X/Twitter that he had lumbar disc surgery on Friday in New York to the L4/5 area of his spine.

“After experiencing pain and lack of mobility in my back, I consulted with doctors and surgeons to have tests taken,” Woods wrote on X. “The scans determined that I had a collapsed disc in L4/5, disc fragments and a compromised spinal canal. I opted to have my disc replaced yesterday, and I already know I made a good decision for my health and my back.”

Woods’ post said the surgery was performed by Dr Shereez Qureshi and his team at the Hospital for Special Surgery.

Woods underwent numerous surgeries to his back and legs through the years, and since an auto crash in February 2021 that badly damaged his right leg and ankle, he’s experienced: a subtalar procedure on his ankle in April 2023; a sixth surgery on his back to repair a nerve impingement; and surgery for a ruptured Achilles tendon in his left leg that he suffered while working out in March 2025.

That injury last spring prevented Woods from returning to the Masters, from which he had to withdraw in 2024 with leg soreness after he’d made the cut. He didn’t compete for the rest of the year, other than in four matches of the inaugural season of TGL, the indoor tech-infused league that Woods founded with Rory McIlroy.

Woods, who turns 50 on December 30, had not given any earlier indications of when he might return to competitive golf, but this latest surgery would seem to eliminate him from playing in the PNC Championship that features pros and their family members. This year’s PNC is scheduled for December 18-21 at the Ritz-Carlton Golf Club in Orlando, Florida. Last year, Tiger and son Charlie were beaten in a playoff by Bernhard Langer and his son Jason.

In the four-plus years since the car accident, Woods has competed outside TGL and unofficial events only 10 times. His most recent official start came in the Open Championship in July 2024, when he missed the cut by shooting 79-77. Woods’ last victories, which gave him a record-tying total of 82, were in 2019 at the Masters and Zozo Championship.
