Talks between the PGA Tour and LIV Golf have hit another impasse, raising questions if professional golf’s cold war is about to heat up. But, as witnessed in Tuesday’s practice round at Augusta National, least one schism-related beef has been put to bed.
In a Wednesday press conference with Bryson DeChambeau and Joaquin Niemann, the brutally honest five-time major champion was asked to assess LIV Golf, now that the league is well into its fourth year. And he didn’t mince words. Again.
The top player not already exempt into the US Open field after the Korea event in early May will qualify. It’s the only major championship this year for which Niemann has not yet qualified.
Always a relatively aloof character, Brooks Koepka neither confirmed nor dispelled rumours that he is seeking to leave the LIV Golf League in favour of a return to the PGA Tour. Which in and of itself might be telling.
Judging off their back and forth in a conference call overnight, DeChambeau and Koepka have come a long, long way since SpikesGate at Kiawah Island in 2021.
As an unrepentant golf nerd endlessly obsessed with the minute details of the swing, Brooks Koepka seemed to be the antithesis of everything I found most fascinating.
An 18-hole made-for-TV spectacle featuring Scottie Scheffler, Rory McIlroy, Brooks Koepka and Bryson DeChambeau that was announced last month will take place on December 17 at Shadow Creek in Las Vegas, according to a press release.
