Tasmanian tour pro Mat Goggin was 13 years old in the late 1980s, enjoying his first year of playing golf, when his grandfather insisted he head to 7 Mile Beach in Hobart, Tasmania, to hit balls off the sand.
Course founder and driving force Mathew Goggin announced overnight that the design collaboration between Mike DeVries and Mike Clayton in Hobart’s east will begin welcoming golfers for preview play in late April.
Likely to be known as 5 Mile Beach, the second course will add an important dimension to the peninsula of land on the eastern side of the Tasmanian capital.
One of eight Australians in the field, Goggin’s chances are buoyed by his recent play at home on the Challenger PGA Tour of Australasia, including a third-place finish behind Order of Merit champion Kazuma Kobori at the Webex Players Series Victoria.
