Scottie Scheffler is a cool customer. On the golf course, he doesn’t get too up and he doesn’t get too down. Given his level of play over the last several years, that may not seem like much. Who wouldn’t be calm after three majors, a FedEx Cup, an Olympic gold medal and countless other victories? But Scheffler’s even-keeled attitude isn’t just a by-product of his success, it’s a big contributor to it. That’s what makes this next video so surprising.
RELATED: Adam Scott right in contention at halfway mark at Oakmont
On Friday, after gutting through a tough second-round 71 at Oakmont, the world No.1 did what we have all come to expect from the world No.1: He returned to the driving range and continued grinding. What golf fans probably didn’t expect, however, is how frustrated Scheffler appeared during that session with swing coach Randy Smith, gesturing animatedly down the range, hat askew, before eventually stepping out of the box to cool down. Take a look.

Prison Scottie, back!?!?
OK, OK, obviously we’re joking. We don’t know what was said or, more importantly, how it was said, but if it looks like a golfer who’s searching and shouts like a golfer who’s searching, you can probably guess the rest. Maybe you’re not buying that, but check out caddie Ted Scott’s silent thousand-yard stare. If that body language doesn’t scream “mom and dad are arguing and I’m staying the hell out of it” to you, then we grew up in very different households.
All of that said, and this video being what it is, Scheffler remains the best golfer on this tiny space pebble we call a planet. He hasn’t had his A game, or even his B game, so far at Oakmont, but he was still only seven strokes off second when this clip started making the rounds. He could easily put together a run like we saw late Saturday at Quail Hollow and plant himself firmly in the mix come Sunday. If that does happen, perhaps this extra range session, and the frank exchange of ideas that occurred during it, will prove to be the difference.
