Sahith Theegala says the key to his opening round at The Sentry was eating an unhinged amount of sushi

After the opening round of the first PGA Tour signature event of the season, Sahith Theegala sits atop a stacked Sentry leaderboard at nine-under-par. That’s a pretty good start to 2024 for the newly minted first-time winner. So what’s fueling the 26-year-old fine form in Maui? Well, as it turns out sushi. Lots and lots of sushi.

You know that old saying “there’s a lot of fish in the sea”? There aren’t anymore. Theegala ate all of them. After waiting 90 minutes for a seat at local sushi spot Miso Phat Sushi on Wednesday, Theegala says he was pretty hungry and backed up that claim by downing sashimi, hand rolls and edamame like Joey Chestnut downs hot dogs on the Fourth of July.

We’ll see if Theegala’s sushi swing continues in round two, but if it does, he may want to book a table Miso Phat Sushi for the remainder of the weekend. Sure, a Hawaiian mixed plate might hit the spot, but with $3.6 million on the line, you don’t want to mess with success.
