It was a dream Day 1 for Team Europe at the Ryder Cup as the boys in blue and yellow jumped out to a three-point lead. But they did make one big bogey at Bethpage Black that had many of Golf Twitter—including former players—pointing it out. It just had nothing to do with the team’s golf.
No, we’re talking about the collars on their team shirts. Yes, the collars.

Did you notice that they were crinkling up in all sorts of directions as the day went on? (Just look at that photo above!) Well, Golf Twitter certainly did. Here’s a sampling from Friday:
First observation from Ryder Cup.
The collars on the European shirts.
They look like $15 shirts from Kohls 🤨

Europe absolutely flying and all I can think is ‘why did no one mention that annoying collar during the design process?’#RyderCup #RyderCup2025

Very much enjoying the #RyderCup2025 but the collars on the Europe shirts is causing me some bother. Just not sitting right, not sure if they’ve got a decent iron in the team room.

Imagine getting the contract for making the clothes for a Ryder Cup team and not making them with enough quality to not have the collar look like stuff I buy at Target for $12.99.

These collars are a disaster for @RyderCupEurope. Someone at Loro Piana is in for a bad day at work on Monday. #bigissue #collargate

And on Saturday morning, Lee Westwood weighed in on the matter in response to a Graeme McDowell question.
The definitely had a little curl to them late in the day Westy!!! https://t.co/4TAuppNcPL

Which leads us to our own question? How does this happen? Especially when we know how Europe plans everything surrounding this biennial event in excruciating detail. Heck, they even made a whole video about their uniforms called THREADS OF VICTORY and how they were linking back to former winning teams.

What they did is very cool. But you wouldn’t expect collar technology to get worse over the past few decades. Seve would not stand for this!

Anyway, Loro Piana, an Italian luxury brand, made Europe’s outfits for a second consecutive Ryder Cup. I’m sure they make beautiful clothes, but they just need to work on this one aspect. In any event, when it comes to collars, the Americans have already won. So, they have that going for them at least.
