It was a feel-good weekend in the world of professional golf. In California, Sahith Theegala claimed his first PGA Tour victory with his whole family looking on. Afterwards, they were positively glowing with pride. Meanwhile at the Wentworth Club, affable Kiwi Ryan Fox claimed the DP World Tour’s biggest prize after a tough year that included the loss of his father-in-law to cancer.

A triple-bogey could have been the end for Ryan Fox. Instead, it jump-started his ‘surprise’ BMW PGA win

There were plenty of great moments to cherry-pick from the ensuing celebrations, but our favourite belongs to Fox who was seen gleefully whispering to caddie Dean Smith during the trophy presentation, “We get to go back to August next year.” Indeed you do, Ryan. Indeed you do.

If you’ve ever wondered if the pros care as much about the Masters as much as you do, this is your reminder. Sure, the $US1.4 million payday was nice, but Fox and Smith were downright giddy about the prospect of teeing it up at Augusta National next April. That tells you everything you need to know about the Augusta aura.

The 2024 Masters will be Fox’s second Masters after qualifying for the first time in 2023. As for Smith, he had one simple request for his player:

“Go and win it.”
