The new season of the Golf Australia Order of Merit will begin this weekend at the Tasmanian Amateur Championship with Ross Herbert being recognised for his incredible contribution to the game.
More than 50 national Order of Merit events will be played across the country with winners being declared across juniors, open age and senior categories based on the highest points accumulation.
For 2022 and beyond, the men’s and women’s Orders of Merit will be awarded the Ross Herbert Memorial trophies, in honour of the late Ross Herbert and his remarkable contribution to the game of golf.
Herbert was the inaugural coach of the AIS Golf Programme and instrumental in setting up the structures, systems and processes that were put in place and helped establish the AIS as one of the world’s best elite development programs.
Dominic Wall, director at the R&A, worked with Herbert for many years and has fond memories of their time together.
“Ross was considered by many as one of the best short game coaches in world golf. He was a genius in bunkers,” Wall said.
“He had a love for the game and a desire to help golfers reach their full potential, both on and off the course. Ross was conscious of leaving the game in a better condition for those that followed.”
Donna Harwood, Ross’ wife, said: “It’s such an honour to see Ross’ impact on the game of golf still being recognised some decades later.
“Our three daughters and I are extremely humbled to know that Ross’ passion and dedication are still an inspiration to so many and we wish all players the best of luck for the season. As ‘Rosco’ always said: nothing is a problem just a project!”
Golf Australia general manager of events and operations, Therese Magdulski, says it is great recognition of Herbert’s involvement with the game.
“The GA Order of Merit forms an important part of our high-performance player pathway and in inspiring our next generation,” Magdulski said.
“This recognition is a perfect fit given Ross played such an important role in preparing players for a career in the game.”
After two years of impacted travel, there is great anticipation of high quality fields returning and the country’s best athletes battling it out in their respective division.
