Like “Happy Gilmore 2” was for the golf fans last summer, the release of “The Devil Wear Prada 2” was a decades-in-the-making sequel that fashionistas had been clamoring for. Of course, fans were anxious to see what had become of Miranda Priestly, Andy Sachs and their other favorite characters in the 20 years that had taken place since the original. Still, the movie also promised to be chock full of Internet-breaking cameos to talk about afterward.
Suffice it to say, TDWP2 didn’t disappoint in that regard. Among the celebrity sightings were Lady Gaga, Donatella Versace, Heidi Klum, Naomi Campbell, Ashley Graham, Jenna Bush Hager, Tina Brown, Karl-Anthony Towns.
Yet here’s where the worlds of golf and fashion unexpectedly collided. Upon the movie’s release this week, among the surprising faces that made brief appearances along side actors Meryl Streep, Anne Hathaway and Emily Blunt were …
Rory McIlroy and his wife, Erica.
The McIlroys get about 10 to 15 seconds of screen time mid-movie as their mingling with other guests at a swanky Met Gala-style party. To see the golf icon alongside other beautiful people was a surprise.
During the European premiere of the movie in London, director David Frankel was asked about the cameos and offered this revelation:
“Well, the one I was most excited for will surprise isn’t even in the world of fashion. I mean I loved having Rory McIlroy,” Frankel said. “He was a great sport. A very good actor.”
So how did the golfer wind up adding to his IMBD page? Frankel says he thought of the idea after hearing McIlroy doing an interview in 2025.
“You know it was triggered because last year, right before he won the Players Championship, the press asked him what he did to relax the night before he won the tournament, and he said he watched “The Devil Wears Prada,” Frankel said. “I knew we had a fan.”
Indeed, after winning a Monday morning playoff over J.J. Spaun at TPC Sawgrass, McIlroy revealed how he handled the fact he hadn’t been able to close out the tournament on Sunday.
“Yeah, I would say I was a little disappointed last night, but I also was mindful that I couldn’t feel that way, that I needed to reset. Once I got back to the hotel, I just tried to sort of forget about it and had some room service, watched a little bit of Devil Wears Prada and went to bed. That was basically it.
That Rory and Erica made the final product is notable too considering reports that the appearance of at least one high profile actor—Sydney Sweeney—ended up on the cutting room floor.
