Ricky Ponting might be a cricket legend, but if you saw him breaking down his Callaway golf bag in Queenstown recently, you’d swear he was a Tour rep.
The former Aussie Test captain’s passion for the game – particularly golf gear – is next-level, so much so that if Callaway ever needs a new clubfitter, they should probably just hire him on the spot!
Ponting, a self-confessed “golf nerd,” ran through every club in his bag during the New Zealand Open Pro-Am, showing off his insane knowledge of shafts, grinds, and lofts like a seasoned fitter. And we’re not talking about the usual “I play a driver, some irons, and a putter” spiel. Punter went DEEP – so deep that even some pros might have learned a thing or two.
Watch it here:
His playing partner, rising Aussie star Louis Dobbelaar, was left shaking his head at how much Ponting knows about golf gear. But then again, this is a guy who’s been obsessed with golf for decades. He’s tested everything Callaway has released over the past 10 years, constantly tweaking his setup in search of the perfect fit.
And if you think he just talks the talk, think again – Ponting nearly holed a 276m par-4 during the pro-am, setting up an easy eagle. Not bad for a bloke who made his name with a bat, not a driver.
With his brain for golf gear and his pure love for the game, Ponting isn’t just another retired athlete hitting the fairways – he’s the ultimate golf nerd, and we’re here for it.
