Callaway officials have announced that the company agreed to terms with Phil Mickelson and his representatives on a renewal of their partnership. A press release from Callaway describes the length of Phil’s endorsement agreement to be “the remainder of his competitive playing career”.
The 47-year-old signed with Callaway in September 2004 after a partnership with Titleist, and Mickelson has played Callaway’s clubs ever since – which includes four of his five Major titles.
“Our long association has been hugely important to my career and this extended agreement is a great honour,” Mickelson said in a press release. “We’ve enjoyed close personal and working relationships for 13 years and I’m very grateful that it will continue through my playing days and beyond.”
At this week’s Presidents Cup, in which Lefty earned a captain’s pick from Steve Stricker to keep his Team USA streak alive, Mickelson is playing new prototype irons, the company confirmed. The move isn’t a rare one for Phil, as most will remember the 2004 Ryder Cup at Oakland Hills where Mickelson made an equipment switch prior to the matches. Forever a tinkerer, Mickelson made a change to the shaft in his driver before last year’s Ryder Cup in pursuit of more distance.
The new irons this week shouldn’t be a major change for the five-time Major winner.
“Phil has meant so much to Callaway and to the game of golf,” said Callaway Golf president and chief executive, Chip Brewer in the press release. “He is a dynamic athlete and an iconic ambassador. We are excited to continue our relationship with him for years to come.”
