Robert MacIntyre surely played the second round at Augusta National on his best behaviour after garnering some unwanted publicity in the first round for an outburst on the 15th hole.

Making his fourth Masters start, the Scotman’s opening lap went from good to bad to abysmal after a quadruple-bogey 9 on the famed par 5. He was already running hot after putting off the green on the 13th, as evidenced by some inappropriate language picked up by the mics. But when MacIntyre was caught giving the middle finger at the water, it appears to have gotten the attention of Augusta National officials.

According to The Scotsman, MacIntyre received a reprimand after the round. The story noted that he “was reminded of a code of conduct for the event after a day to forget at Augusta National… One of the officials had a word with him after signing for his hugely disappointing effort.”
The two-time PGA Tour winner posted an eight-over 80, finishing 82nd of the 91 players in the field. On top of the incidents at 13 and 15, he was also seen slamming his club on the 17th after a disappointing second shot. That’s quite an opening round! Understandably perhaps, MacIntyre did not speak to the waiting media after finishing on the 18th.

As our Joel Beall commented after the round, golfers blowing off steam is understandable – the headline of his story was “Sometimes golf needs to be told to go to hell” – but maybe next time MacIntyre might want to not make things too obvious for the always-watching Masters officials.
