AUGUSTA, Ga. — Following a brutal opening four-over 76, Bryson DeChambeau’s chances of winning the Masters were all but dashed. But the two-time U.S. Open winner still fought to make the cut on Friday, and after 17 holes it looked like he had secured two more rounds at Augusta National,

Then, catastrophe struck.

DeChambeau took a wood off the 18th tee, missing the fairway into the right trees. From there he hit a quality punch shot all the way into the front left greenside bunker. Even if he made bogey from there, he still would have been around for the weekend.

He proceeded to make triple bogey, a full ejection to six over par, two shots outside of the cut line. It started with him leaving his third in the bunker, as he attempted to carry it the perfect yardage just over the front lip, only to see it come rolling back to his feet:

His fourth shot was well short of the pin and wound up rolling all the way off the front of the green. Stroke No. 5 went 12 feet past the hole and he missed the putt for double. DeChambeau has now missed the cut in three of his last five Masters, with a T-6 and a T-5 in that span.

He is by far the biggest name who won’t be on the grounds Saturday and Sunday. Here are some other notables who were sent packing on Friday, too.

J.J. Spaun

The reigning U.S. Open champion began his day at two over but quickly fell to plus-six after 11 holes. Despite making birdie at two of the last three, one more bogey at 17 was his undoing. He missed by one, his first MC in the last five majors.

Akshay Bhatia Masters 2026

J.D. Cuban

Bhatia was a hot pick for this tournament after his signature event victory at Bay Hill. After a first-round 73, Bhatia started hot on Friday, birdieing three of the first six holes. He then shot a stunning second-nine 44 to finish at plus-six, two shots off the cut line. The three-time tour winner has missed five out of 10 career cuts in majors with just one top-20 finish along the way.

Nicolai Hojgaard 2270731361

Andrew Redington

The 36th-ranked player in the world coming into the week, Hojgaard finished T-16 in his Masters debut in 2024. Coming off a runner-up in Houston, Hojgaard didn’t carry the momentum into Augusta, shooting six over for two rounds. He’s now missed back-to-back Masters cuts.

Robert MacIntyre

The lefty has been stacking up top 10s in big-time tournaments over the last year, but he will not be adding another to the collection this week. A horrendous first-round 80, which included a middle finger at the 15th hole and led to a reprimanding from the club, sunk him right away.

Cameron Smith

The LIV haters will be out in full force, as the Aussie, who shot seven over this week, has now missed SIX straight cuts in major championships. That Open Championship win at St. Andrews in 2022 feels like it happened a decade ago.

Min Woo Lee

The Chef did not cook this week. Lee, ranked 25th in the world, shot 11 over. He’s now missed four straight cuts in the majors.
