After FaceTiming with pop megastar Justin Bieber, newly minted PGA Tour winner Min Woo Lee said he would rest up in Las Vegas ahead of a shot at a maiden major championship win at his “favourite course”, Augusta National.
Lee shot up to the highest-ranked Australian male golfer in the world at No.22 after breaking through for a career-first PGA Tour win at the Texas Children’s Houston Open.
He FaceTimed Bieber, an avid golf fan, and was soaking up the attention of the sporting world while practising light and resting before the 89th Masters next week. Lee will join 2013 winner Adam Scott as well as Cam Smith, Jason Day, and Cam Davis.
Lee has form at Augusta National having tied 14th on debut in 2022 and T-22 last year. He said in a media call with reporters that the demands for a player to shape the ball both ways, and have a world-class short game, played into his hands.
“I love playing there, I love being back there,” Lee said. “I really enjoy going back there and playing some good golf.
“Augusta is a course where random stuff can happen and big scores can happen as well, but when you know you feel good, you can also score well too, so hopefully putting four rounds together and learning from last week helps.”
Lee was injured and battling the flu last year when he earned another top-25 in his Masters career. He had a broken finger suffered in the gym the week prior to Augusta.
“To finish (tied for 22nd) … was pretty good, especially the way I started,” said Lee, who promised to be a “bit safer” this year and not drop a dumbbell on his finger. “I’ll just relax and enjoy my time doing nothing really … and get ready for the big dance.”
