With Day 2 at the 2023 Masters suspended due to inclement weather and falling trees, golf fans bought themselves some time to catch up on all the highlights from a challenging day at Augusta National. And there were no better highlights than what will surely go down as a contender for shot of the year.
Australia’s Cam Smith, struggling for momentum at even par, was looking to get into red figures at the reachable par-5 eighth. That was before he found the fairway trap off the tee, much to his frustration.
What would have been a lay-up option for most mere mortals quickly became an outrageous club selection when he pulled a fairway wood out of the bag. Yes, A FAIRWAY WOOD… at the Masters… just standard procedure, folks!
What happens next was anything but standard. It’s downright ridiculous. It’s Cam Smith at his very best:
“It must have been a great lie,” scoffs commentator and fellow Queenslander Ian Baker-Finch.
“Sounded like a great strike,” adds Finchy’s partner in the booth, Trevor Immelman
It was. Smith’s ball sailed right up to the left-hand side of the putting surface before trickling down the slope towards the cup, leaving the 2022 Open champion with a very makable putt for eagle.
“WHAT A GOLF SHOT!” screamed Immelman.
Of course, we all know what happened with the putt. As only Cam can do, he drained it. The unlikely eagle took Smith to two-under and keeps him right in the tournament as a weather-interrupted weekend beckons.
“I was always taught, wood in sand, wood in head. But (Cam) certainly proved me wrong with that shot,” Baker-Finch concludes.
