In each of his previous four PGA Tour wins, Marc Leishman has come from behind, shooting 69 or lower all four times. Today at Torrey Pines, the big Aussie did it a fifth time, shooting a seven-under 65 to overcome a four-shot deficit at the Farmers Insurance Open. Lurking in the shadows has become a position he’s very comfortable in.

“Playing well helps,” said Leishman when asked why he has a knack for the comeback win. “I didn’t actually hit it that well off the tee today, so I don’t know what the knack is. Putting, always. You’re not going to win tour events if you’re not putting well. I putted probably as good as I’ve ever putted today.”

Leishman ranked first in strokes-gained: putting for the entire week, but in the final round he was on a different level. He gained 4.77 strokes on the green in the final round, nearly three full strokes more than he did the previous two rounds.

Making the win all the more special was that it came on Australia Day. Overnight, fellow Victorian Lucas Herbert also won on the European Tour, claiming his first professional victory at the Omega Dubai Desert Classic.

Jon Rahm, who won at Torrey Pines in 2017, was at 12-under entering the final round. He stumbled early, going four-over on his first five holes to drop to eight-under. He did shoot a back-nine 31 to climb back into contention, but wound up losing to Leishman by one.

Brandt Snedeker and Rory McIlroy finished in a tie for third at 12-under.
